Uriezzo's Orridi

Italy - Piedmont - Verbania

The Uriezzo’s Orridi are a little hidden gem just north dia Domodossola.

Located in the heart of the Ossola Valley in Piedmont, these canyons carved by ice and water seem to have emerged from another planet.

4.1 Km

Easy Difficult

This is a complex of Orridi that will make you feel like you are in one of the American canyons.

Continuing the path beyond the gorges, you will see the majestic potholes of the giants with their crystal clear waters.

How to get there

For this route you will have two choices. We offer two different parking areas. The first is located near the beginning of the route, but it consists of only a few parking spaces. The other, on the other hand, is a bit further away, but the parking spaces are definitely more numerous.

The closest parking area is located at “L’oratorio di Santa Lucia – Premia” (click here for the coordinates).

The farthest parking lot is in“Via Case Benevoli – Premia” (click here for the coordinates).

The path

Starting from the farthest parking lot, we take the paved road downhill, which leads to the Oratory of Santa Lucia, where the second parking lot is located.

From here our path begins. At first the path is cobblestone and crosses an open field, then enters a grove. At a certain point you will find a sign inviting you to turn left towards the South Orrido.

This section consists of a path with steps, some of them steep, winding inside the South Gorge. You will feel as if you are walking among American canyons, nestled between rock walls sculpted by time.

The landscape is truly striking, and it will be impossible to resist the temptation to take lots of souvenir photos.

Once out of the Gorge, you will return to the main path and continue downhill until you reach a bridge. From here, you can admire from above the fascinating Marmitte dei Giganti di Uriezzo, natural pools carved into the rock by water erosion.

The Marmitte dei Giganti are small natural pools, carved into the rock by the action of water over millennia. The water is so clear that you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a photo montage!

From here you can choose whether to go back along the same path, or complete a small loop, which deviates slightly from the outward route.

Be warned: this section is quite isolated and has some steep sections. For this reason,  following a GPX track is essential to avoid getting lost in the mountain paths.

From the Marmitte dei Giganti, you will not have to cross the bridge again, but continue to the right, taking a stairway somewhat hidden among the vegetation.

The path is quite steep and runs for a good stretch inside the forest. But don’t worry: your effort will be amply rewarded, because a real hidden gem awaits you.

At the end of this stretch you will find a bridge that crosses the Balmasurda’s Orrido from above. The spectacle from up here is breathtaking: you will find yourself suspended dozens of meters above a gorge with crystal clear waters.

After the bridge, the trail rejoins the main path, which will take you back to the starting point.

Conclusion

If you love nature and spectacular places, we are sure you will love the Uriezzo’s Orridi.

On this trail you will walk among breathtaking rock walls, narrow passages and amazing views.

A true spectacle of nature that we definitely recommend you visit.
