Uriezzo's Marmitte Giganti

Italy - Piedmont - Verbania

The Uriezzo’s Marmitte Giganti, located in the picturesque Ossola Valley, are spectacular natural cavities carved into the rock by the erosive action of water over millennia.

Easy Difficult

These formations, similar to natural pools, offer a unique and fascinating spectacle, immersed in the uncontaminated nature of Piedmont.

In this article, we will guide you to discover this extraordinary geological phenomenon, providing all the information you need to organise your out-of-town excursion: how to get there, the best time to go, what to bring and useful tips for an unforgettable experience.

How to get there

To get to the Uriezzo’s Marmitte Giganti, you must first cross the Orridi di Uriezzo.

From the bridge over the South Orrido continue downhill. You will arrive at a viewpoint from where you can see the Marmitte from above, below the bridge. Then follow the signs to reach them on foot via a well-marked path.

General Info

The Marmitte dei Giganti are perfectly smooth cavities created by the swirling action of water and debris that have been polishing the rock for centuries. The result? Natural pools of clear, emerald-coloured water that look like something out of a postcard.

In the past, popular legends attributed these formations to mythical creatures such as giants, hence their evocative name.

When to go? ☀️

The best time is from spring to autumn, when the weather is mild and the path is not slippery. In summer, when the water is shallower and more transparent, you can better admire the shapes and colours of the potholes.

Avoid rainy days: the path may become muddy and less safe.
