High Line NYC
United States - New York
Have you ever walked above the streets of New York?
No, we’re not talking about a bridge or a skyscraper… but a real suspended urban park: the High Line.
Easy Difficult
Born from an old abandoned railway, today it is one of the city’s most surprising attractions, where nature, contemporary art and architecture meet. A perfect place to walk, take photos, relax… and yes, even meet a giant pigeon.
General Info
Let’s start by telling you that walking above the streets of New York is possible, and no, you don’t need to take a helicopter!
The High Line is an elevated park built on an old railway line, which now runs through some of Manhattan’s most iconic neighbourhoods: from the Meatpacking District to Hudson Yards, via Chelsea.
A 2.3-kilometre-long route that winds its way through contemporary art, manicured gardens, breathtaking views and futuristic architecture.
A true urban gem, perfect for getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city… without ever really leaving it.
Entrance to the route
Admission to the route is free of charge.
➤Hour: usually open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. in summer.
We recommend you always check the official websitethehighline.org.
➤Accessibility: suitable for practically everyone, including families with pushchairs or people with reduced mobility.
What to do?
Taking a walk on the High Line is a truly unique experience.
Here are a few stops we suggest you make:
✅ Chelsea Market: a lively food and cultural market located in the Chelsea district, famous for street food, handicrafts and an industrial-chic atmosphere.
✅ Urban Theater (14th St): steps with a view of the street below, perfect for breaks.
✅ Open-air art installations: They change periodically and range from the sculpture to the mural to the absurd… like the giant pigeon!
✅ View of Hudson River and Empire State Building
✅ Hudson Yards and The Vessel: The impressive honeycomb sculpture awaits you at the end of the path.
When to go? ☀️
Il parco è accessibile in tutte le stagioni.
The park is accessible in all seasons.
During the warm season, free outdoor activities are also organised, such as Zumba, Tai Chi and fitness classes and much more.
The programme of activities is published on the official website we mentioned above (link to website).
History
And if you are curious* in this paragraph we tell you something about the history of this route.
The High Line began as a freight railway in the 1930s, raised above the traffic to avoid accidents. For decades it served the warehouses and factories of the West Side, until it fell into disuse in the 1980s.
The risk was demolition.
But a group of citizens had a different vision: why not turn it into a public park?
Since 2009, thanks to an ambitious urban regeneration project, the High Line has become one of the most popular and photographed attractions in NYC.
Extra tips
After travelling the length and breadth of the High Line, we leave you with a few tips for your visit:
